South Bank in London worth a visit

I’ve just been to London and was fortunate enough to stay in a flat on South Bank. Fortunate indeed, because there’s a festival happening all summer long. And it doesn’t end until September 11th.

South Bank is a mixture of delicious restaurants, the National Theatre, street performers, market fairs, the famous London Eye, galleries and lots of other attractions.

Especially with kids, London can prove to be a very expensive stay. So, the South Bank summer festival came in handy. Everyday all kinds of street performers were entertaining its audience along the bank. We enjoyed singers, acrobats and various artists, as well as human sculpture making in the sand on the narrow sandbanks thatwould appear every time the tide was low in the Thames. A group of artists established an beach with fine sand and beach toys, and during the day families with small kids dropped by and played in the sand.

In front of the National Theatre, I came across a couple of lovely and very inspiring installations made from scrap. A Spanish group of people called Katakrak had made a playground full of funny, animal-like and primitive machines. Some challenged you to perform; some invited you to play a game. All day long the playground was full of kids and parents playing together and exploring these machines. What a fantastic idea to turn scrap into meaningful fun.
